CENTER OF THE EARTH
The concept of CENTER OF THE EARTH came to me based upon a series I am working on which I call "SPIRIT OF THE LAND" where I explore my strong connection to the earth. In this piece, I chose to work on canvas to which I applied layers of collage, acrylic paint, and gels that are stamped with textures or where texture, such as sand, has been added. By using a subtle palette, I have tried to express a sense of stability and serenity.
The composition directs the eye to a focal point made prominent by the use of smaller shapes, metallic leaf and small turquoise stones. I have applied layer upon layer of transparent and translucent color that conforms into shapes suggestive of large sedimentary rocks. The addition of subtle metallic paint can be seen from certain directions but not from others. I attempt to entice the viewer to look closer and to examine the surface to see what lies beneath.
This painting is also a metaphor for the human spirit which is comprised of layer upon layer and a central core (or focal point) that resides in each of us that is our unique self - not always obvious to the world, but always there, nevertheless.
In each of my paintings I try to stretch myself artistically and to embark upon a journey of discovery where I explore and express myself through my work. Frequently the process is more importanbt to me than the finished product. I try to work beyond what I know and to tap into what I feel and want others to feel as they view my artwork.
