BREAKTHROUGH is a painting inspired by a smaller work, a torn-paper collage, and is a continuation of my CENTER OF THE EARTH series. I have chosen to work on canvas using collage and acrylic paint to create a vivid abstract piece with a limited primary palette. Note the central flower-like shape with small stones at its core that directs the eye to a focal point. Yellow shapes are irregular and seem to be imposed upon a field of rugged blues and strong purples. The white outlines around fragmented areas suggest a cracking of earth or even ice, with the petals of a flower breaking through from the surface beneath. BREAKTHROUGH is also a metaphor for a time in my life where I tried to grow and break through a long period of sadness after the passing of my husband. The use of painted layers in my work represents layers of meaning and memory. I have attempted to work spontaneously in this piece, without preplanning, which is a journey of self discovery as well as a creative journey.
